I had a summer job working for my father’s metal recycling business, K Scrap Resources. As
a vendor for the Big Three automotive companies, they were undergoing an intensive compliance
program to meet the stringent requirements placed upon them. I was afforded the opportunity
to support their compliance officer in their efforts to obtain their industry specific certification.
This predated sophisticated policy software. There was no “internet” to see what other established
policies looked like. It was binders upon binders, discussion upon discussion, and pot of coffee on
top of pot of coffee. Not only did the company receive its certification but subsequently received
the honor of a Quality Systems Award for exceptional compliance.
While very young at the time, what I learned from this experience has become a personal
mantra, a business mantra, and a mantra I believe can support the Legal League 100 in its
continued growth and representation of our members and supporters.
Say what you do. Do what you say. Prove it.
It speaks of honesty. It speaks of integrity and speaks of accountability. During the past decade,
we have all experienced the strains of a heightened compliance environment. We have experienced
new tools, new software, and a plethora of new challenges and demands. At the end of the day, what
our clients are asking for is actually very simple: Say what you do. Do what you say. Prove it.
Within the context of our firm, whether it is a policy or procedure or a client request for
information, the final step of our process is always to ask if we can affirmatively attest to the mantra.
In the context of the Legal League 100, it affords the membership the same opportunity. The
support we receive from the industry at large is directly correlated to the transparency we can
provide about our group. This mantra can continue to strengthen the League for many years to
come by speaking to our honesty, integrity and accountability as an association.
A new year brings a fresh slate. It’s time to hit the metaphorical gym and get our workout into
overdrive. Let’s say what we do. Let’s do what we say and let’s prove it.
“The support we receive from the industry at large is directly correlated to the transparency we can provide about our group.”
